AI is everywhere at the moment. But what does it actually mean when we talk about AI in vehicle diagnostics? For a technician, it doesn't mean plugging a diagnostic tool into a vehicle and letting AI magically find the fault. It's much simpler than that. AI can help you make sense of the information you've already got — fault codes, symptoms, live data and other vehicle information — and help point you towards what to check next. A Practical ExampleImagine you've got a vehicle in the workshop with several fault codes. You can read the codes with your diagnostic tool, but that's only the starting point. Which fault is actually causing the problem? Are some of the other codes a consequence of it? What should you test first? This is where AI can be useful. Instead of searching through information manually, AI can help interpret what's in front of you and suggest possible causes or areas to investigate. You still test it. You still prove the fault. You still make the diagnosis. Will AI Diagnose the Car for You?Not quite — and that's an important distinction. At Thinkcar UK, we see AI as another tool available to the technician, rather than something that's there to replace their knowledge and experience. It won't replace understanding how a system works, carrying out measurements or proving that a component has failed. What it can do is help you get from: “I've got a fault.” to: “This is where I should start looking.” And when you've got several jobs waiting outside the workshop, saving diagnostic time matters. AI and THINKCAR Diagnostic ToolsWe're already seeing this technology become part of professional vehicle diagnostics, including on the Thinkcar 399 professional diagnostic tool. But rather than getting caught up in the term “AI-powered diagnostics”, we'd rather show technicians what the technology can actually do in a workshop. Take a look at the two THINKCAR demonstrations above and decide for yourself: Would this help you diagnose a difficult job in your workshop? Because ultimately, that's the important bit.
