Thinkcar Technical Bulletin, Nissan

13/1/2026

Nissan Intermediate Gateway – Manual Reset for Temporary Service AccessBulletin TypeTechnical Information / Service Access Guidance
Applicable BrandsNissan
Applicable Model YearsTypically 2019–2023 (model and software dependent)

OverviewMany late-model Nissan vehicles are equipped with an Intermediate (Secure) Gateway Module designed to restrict unauthorised diagnostic access to certain service functions.
While Nissan does not provide a method to permanently disable this gateway, field testing has shown that on some vehicles a manual reset / sleep-cycle procedure can temporarily release gateway restrictions, allowing access to selected service features using compatible aftermarket diagnostic tools.
This article explains how the reset works, when it applies, and how to perform it correctly.
⚠️ This procedure does not permanently deactivate the gateway and does not remove vehicle security systems.

What Is the Nissan Intermediate Gateway? The Intermediate Gateway acts as a security firewall between the OBD diagnostic port and internal vehicle networks. Its purpose is to:
  • Prevent unauthorised control of vehicle systems
  • Protect immobiliser and theft-related functions
  • Restrict advanced diagnostics without authentication
As a result, some diagnostic tools may experience blocked access to:
  • Actuation tests
  • Service resets
  • Calibrations and relearns

Manual Gateway Reset – What It DoesThe manual reset procedure forces the vehicle’s Body Control Module (BCM) and gateway to enter a full sleep state, then reinitialise.
On certain Nissan vehicles, this process can:
  • Clear temporary security states
  • Allow limited access to service functions
  • Enable diagnostics for a single session
This is a temporary condition. Normal gateway restrictions return once the vehicle wakes fully or is cycled.

Manual Reset Procedure (Temporary Gateway Release)Step 1 – Vehicle Preparation
  • Ignition OFF
  • Key removed from vehicle
  • Bonnet open
  • All doors closed
Keep the key fob away from the vehicle to prevent unintended wake-up.

Step 2 – Battery Disconnect (Critical)
  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal
  2. Leave disconnected for 20–30 minutes
This time is required to:
  • Shut down the BCM
  • Allow CAN networks to discharge
  • Place the gateway into deep sleep
⚠️ Shorter disconnect times may not be effective.

Step 3 – Reconnection & Wake Sequence
  1. Reconnect the negative battery terminal
  2. Do not press the brake pedal
  3. Insert key / press start button without turning ignition ON
  4. Wait 30–60 seconds
This allows controlled module initialisation.

Step 4 – Diagnostic Tool Connection
  1. Connect the Thinkcar diagnostic tool before ignition ON
  2. Enter vehicle identification
  3. Attempt access to:
    • Actuation tests
    • Service resets
    • Relearn procedures
If access is granted, the gateway has released for the session.

Step 5 – Ignition ON (If Required)
  • Only switch ignition ON after communication is established
  • Avoid repeated ignition cycling

How Long Does the Access Last?Temporary access may be lost when:
  • Ignition is cycled
  • Doors are opened or locked
  • Vehicle enters a full wake state
  • BCM activity resets security
In most cases, access lasts one diagnostic session.

Limitations
  • Coding and immobiliser functions usually remain locked
  • Not effective on all Nissan software versions
  • Results vary by model and year
  • This is not an OEM-supported procedure

Best Practices for Success
  • Use a battery support unit where possible
  • Keep keyless fobs away during sleep period
  • Avoid opening doors during the reset
  • Connect the diagnostic tool before waking ignition

Important Notes
  • This method does not modify vehicle software
  • No permanent security changes are made
  • Intended for diagnostics and service access only
  • Gateway security fully restores under normal operation

Why Do I Have to Pay for Security Gateway Licenses?

2/11/2025

At Thinkcar UK, we’re proud to offer professional diagnostic tools that are powerful, reliable, and competitively priced. Our annual license renewals are among the most affordable in the automotive diagnostic industry — often up to 60% cheaper than other brands.
But we understand one of the most common questions we receive:
“Why do I have to pay extra for Security Gateway access?”
Here’s everything you need to know.

What Is a Security Gateway?A Security Gateway (SGW) is a digital lock built into many modern vehicles. It protects the CAN network (the communication system between vehicle modules) from unauthorized access through the OBD port.

In simple terms, it ensures that only approved diagnostic devices can access and perform key functions on the vehicle — helping to prevent hacking, unauthorized programming, or data breaches.
Manufacturers such as FCA Group (Fiat, Chrysler, Jeep, Alfa Romeo), Renault/Dacia, Mercedes/Smart, VAG Group (Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda, Seat), and Nissan have already implemented Security Gateways.

Without a valid SGW license, even basic tasks like service light resets, battery registration, or ADAS calibration may be restricted.

Why Do Security Gateways Exist?Following a 2015 cybersecurity incident where hackers remotely accessed a connected vehicle, car manufacturers took major steps to protect onboard systems. Secure Gateways were introduced to block unapproved devices from accessing critical modules.
However, under European Right-to-Repair laws, manufacturers must still allow independent garages access — but only through official, licensed channels. These licenses require fees to cover OEM authentication and secure connectivity.

Why Thinkcar Charges for SGW LicensesAt Thinkcar UK, we believe in complete transparency. The Security Gateway license fees are not a profit source — they exist solely to cover:
  • OEM authentication and licensing costs
  • Ongoing software development and maintenance
  • Compliance with manufacturer security requirements
We could easily include these costs in the purchase price of every tool, but that would mean everyone pays, even those who never need gateway access. Instead, we’ve chosen to make SGW licenses optional add-ons, keeping our products affordable and fair.

Only for Official Thinkcar UK Products⚠️ Important: These Security Gateway features are available only on official Thinkcar UK diagnostic tools.
We have seen counterfeit or imported Thinkcar products that do not include genuine OEM gateway access. Using non-official tools can result in incomplete functionality, connection issues, and loss of warranty or support.
To ensure full compatibility, support, and future updates, always purchase your device and license directly from Thinkcar UK or an authorized distributor.

What’s Included with Your Thinkcar ToolEvery new Thinkcar diagnostic tool includes a minimum of two years’ license coverage as standard. The only additional costs you may face are:
  • Remote programming services, and
  • Optional Security Gateway licenses
These flexible add-ons mean you only pay for what you need — keeping our pricing transparent and competitive.

Genuine OEM Coverage — No Workarounds
Thinkcar’s Security Gateway coverage uses genuine OEM-approved licenses. We do not use any unofficial bypasses or third-party hacks. When you activate SGW access through Thinkcar UK, you’re using a fully authorized and secure method, ensuring professional, legal, and reliable diagnostics.

The Future of Vehicle DiagnosticsAs new cars continue to evolve — especially with ADAS systems and connected technologies — Security Gateways are becoming the industry standard.
With Thinkcar UK, you can stay ahead of the curve with authentic, up-to-date, and affordable diagnostic tools backed by genuine OEM access.

✅ Supported Security Gateway Brands
  • FCA Group (Fiat, Chrysler, Jeep, Alfa Romeo)
  • Renault / Dacia
  • Mercedes / Smart
  • VAG Group (Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda, Seat)

Thinkcar EV Diagnostics: Going Beyond Standard OBD Tools

29/10/2025

Picture
Thinkcar EV Diagnostics: Going Beyond Standard OBD ToolsAt Thinkcar UK, one of the most common questions we get is:
“What does the EV Pack do differently from normal OBD diagnostics?”
It’s a great question — and the answer highlights why Thinkcar UK is leading the way in EV diagnostic innovation.

EV Diagnostics as Standard
Firstly, it’s important to clear something up.
All Thinkcar diagnostic tools already include full EV diagnostic and service capabilities as standard. You don’t need the EV Pack to service or diagnose models such as the Volkswagen ID.3, Tesla, or Nissan Leaf.
Even our standard diagnostic tools can:
  • Read and clear fault codes across electric systems
  • Perform essential service functions and resets
  • View live data from drive motors, high-voltage control units, and charging systems
So whether you’re working on hybrids or fully electric vehicles, Thinkcar has you covered right out of the box.

What Makes the Thinkcar EV Pack Different?
Adding the Thinkcar EV Pack unlocks enhanced diagnostic depth for technicians who want to go further into EV analysis. This advanced software and hardware combination gives you access to high-voltage battery data, including individual cell monitoring and detailed charging/discharging performance.
With the EV Pack, you can:
  • Analyse individual battery cells for state-of-health and voltage balance
  • Monitor charge/discharge performance in real-time
  • Test EV batteries outside the vehicle, allowing verification of repairs or standalone testing
This makes the EV Pack essential for workshops offering EV battery repair, reconditioning, or advanced performance assessments.

Which Tools Include the EV Pack?
Currently, the EV Pack comes as standard with the following models:
  • Thinkcar 394
  • Thinkcar 399
For those using our top-tier diagnostic tools — the Thinkcar Euro Max and Euro Master X2 — the EV Pack is available as an optional upgrade. This allows workshops to tailor their setup depending on the level of EV service they offer.

Complete EV Servicing Solutions
Thinkcar UK provides everything a workshop needs to work safely and efficiently with EVs, from diagnostics to repair support equipment.
Our range includes:
  • EVP501 Battery Lift – for the safe removal and installation of high-voltage battery packs.

BMW Software update with Thinkcar MAX

16/7/2022

Recently our customer has a BMW F20 B38B15A Engine with fault code 110001 - Cylinder Injection output, pressure too low in high pressure fuel system. For this our customer checked on the excellent Haynes pro and found a BMW technical Bulletin regarding a software update to cure this issue. Using the Thinkcar MAX our customer was able to update the DME Software version individually from the rest of the car. BMW Ista only allows updates for the whole vehicle. Multiple test drives were carried out to verify the fix.

At Thinkcar UK we were able to support out customer over Teamviewer, this gave the customer the confidence to use his recently delivered Thinkcar MAX. For some reason Teamviewer support wouldn't let us screenshot so I have attached some photos.

Another great success from Thinkcar MAX. The Thinkcar Master 2, and Master X are also capable of carrying out this software update. Please see our shop to purchase.
