Buy Smart. Stay Supported. Avoid Grey Imports.
Modern vehicles rely on software access and manufacturer Secure Gateways (SGW). Only UK‑authorised THINKCAR tools can be registered for SGW access, receive UK warranty, and get professional technical support and software updates.
Quick Check
- Was it purchased from a UK‑authorised dealer?
- Does your tool show as eligible for SGW registration?
- Is your serial number covered by UK warranty?
Devices like the Thinkcar 689 BT are not UK‑spec and cannot be registered for UK SGW or warranty. Avoid.
Why tech support, warranty, and Secure Gateways matter
Professional Tech Support
When a vehicle won’t code, adapt, or initialise, time is money. UK support engineers help with complex diagnostics, remote programming, and escalation—keeping bays moving and customers happy.
UK Warranty Protection
Authorised tools are covered for defects and failures. Grey imports aren’t—leaving you exposed to unexpected replacement costs and downtime.
Secure Gateway (SGW) Access
Most modern marques protect critical functions behind SGW. Without authorised registration your tool may not clear codes, perform calibrations, or carry out service functions on many 2022+ vehicles.
The real risks of grey imports
- ❌ No access to SGW registration → limited or blocked functions on modern vehicles.
- ❌ No UK warranty → you carry the repair/replacement risk.
- ❌ No UK technical support → slower fault resolution and longer downtime.
- ❌ No guaranteed software/firmware updates → reduced coverage and capability.
- ❌ Hidden import costs and delays → the “cheap” price often isn’t.
Impact on your workshop
Inability to perform basic service functions on SGW‑protected models leads to rebookings, lost labour, and reputational damage. Authorised tools protect utilisation, throughput, and first‑time fix rates.
Tip: Ask suppliers for UK serial validation, warranty terms, and SGW eligibility before purchasing.

What is a Grey Import?
A grey import, also known as a parallel import, refers to the importation and sale of genuine products through unauthorized or unofficial channels, without the consent of the original manufacturer or their approved distributor. While these products are legitimate, they are often brought into the UK from other markets where the pricing or availability differs. This may seem appealing at first glance, but grey imports come with significant drawbacks — especially when it comes to advanced diagnostic tools. Important Notice – Please Read Although we do not blame anyone for unintentionally purchasing these tools, we kindly ask that you do not contact us regarding technical support, registration, warranty claims, or software issues for grey imports. We have no affiliation with these products and cannot assist in any way. Unfortunately, we’ve received numerous complaints from individuals who have been scammed with fake devices or lost money on unauthorised sales. This is why it's crucial to buy only from Thinkcar UK-authorised dealers. For the official UK supported tool please see T77/T78 |
Purchasing grey imported Thinkcar diagnostic tools, such as the 689 BT, may seem cost-effective initially, but it's a poor long-term decision. The Thinkcar 689 BT is not a UK-spec product and should be avoided.
Most major vehicle manufacturers — including Fiat, Chrysler, Alfa Romeo, Nissan, Renault, the VAG Group, and Mercedes — have already implemented Secure Gateways in their vehicles, and by the end of 2024, this will be the standard across the board.
Only official UK-supplied Thinkcar tools, purchased through authorised UK dealers, can be registered to access these Secure Gateways. This means grey imports and unofficial tools — including the 689 BT — are locked out, rendering them unusable on many modern vehicles manufactured from 2022 onwards.
Grey Imports Can Cost You a Fortune
Beyond the functionality issues, grey importing Thinkcar tools can end up being far more expensive than buying through the proper channels.
Here’s why:
- No Manufacturer Warranty or Support: Grey market tools are not covered under Thinkcar UK's warranty, and you won’t receive technical support, repairs, or software assistance.
- No Software Updates: Grey imports may not be eligible for the latest software or firmware updates, severely limiting their diagnostic capabilities.
- Import Fees & Delays: Hidden customs duties, taxes, and international shipping costs can catch buyers off guard and inflate the overall price.
- Reduced Compatibility: Without UK-specific configuration and support, many features won’t work as intended — especially with newer vehicles.
When you purchase from Thinkcar UK or an authorised dealer, you're not just buying a tool — you're gaining access to:
✔ Full UK warranty
✔ Professional technical support
✔ Seamless software updates
✔ Secure Gateway compatibility
Avoid grey imports like the Thinkcar 689 BT. They may look like a deal, but the limitations and risks make them a costly mistake.
